Thank you for your kind words this weekend—and even more so, thank you for your prayers. Not only for those offered this weekend, but for your ongoing prayers. St. John Vianney once said, “When people want to destroy religion, they begin by attacking the priest; for when there is no priest, there is no sacrifice, and when there is no sacrifice, there is no religion.” That’s why I truly need your prayers.
Twelve years ago, on June 30, 2013, I celebrated my Mass of Thanksgiving here at the Cathedral (see photo below). The Cathedral had adopted me as a parishioner when I first arrived from southeast Mexico to discern a vocation to the priesthood here in Sioux City. It is tradition for the newly ordained priest to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving the day after ordination in his home parish—and for me, that was here. I never imagined at the time that just six years later I would be assigned as Rector of this beautiful Cathedral and Pastor of the Cathedral Parish, and still be here 12 years later.
Absence from the Parish
One of our faithful volunteers—who stops by the office weekly—keeps telling me she worries I don’t take enough time for myself. Well, she’ll be glad to know I’m doing just that this week. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be driving to Oklahoma to celebrate the 4th of July with a good priest friend of mine, Fr. Brian Buettner. I’ll drive back Saturday morning to be here in time for Sunday Masses.
I wish you all a blessed and safe 4th of July.
